BREAST PAIN

Breast pain (often called mastalgia or mastodynia) mostly affects women in their 20’s – 30’s, but it can occur at any age in a woman’s life (it can also occur in males). It is usually caused by benign, underlying hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle or with menopause.

Many women are concerned that breast pain means that cancer is present – this is almost never the case! While hormones are the usual cause, other things like benign masses and infections, as well as medications and trauma, can bring about breast pain.

It is important that a woman with breast pain be evaluated with breast imaging, examination and a thorough interview to understand the causes of her symptoms and how to treat them.

At Delaware Breast Care, Dr. Quarterman will fully evaluate all cases of breast pain and be sure that her patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
