LUMPECTOMY

A lumpectomy is the most common breast surgery. It is removal of tissue from the breast, regardless of the diagnosis. Breast cancer may be treated with lumpectomy, but other diseases may be treated with lumpectomy, as well.

Lumpectomy involves making an incision and removing the area of concern, often with a thin rim of normal tissue on all sides. The rest of the breast tissue is left in place. It is a brief procedure that usually requires general anesthesia or sedation. Numbing medicine is used, as well.

This is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you can go home the same day. Most women have very little pain afterwards but are advised to limit their activities for a few days after surgery.
